There are many industry terms when it comes to welding. The more you know, the better prepared you will be for your metal fabrication project. We’ve already touched on the various types of welding that can be used in metal fabrication, but in this article, we are going to define some of the most common / important types of welds you should know before diving into a metal fabrication project.
Fillet Weld
A fillet weld is a type of weld in which two surfaces are joined together at right angles. A fillet gauge is a tool used to effectively check the size of a fillet weld.
Groove Weld
A groove weld is a type of weld in which the weld metal is placed in the open space between two part surfaces.
Surface Weld
A surface weld is a weld consisting of one of more strings or weave beads deposited on an unbroken surface. This type of weld is often used to replace metal on worn surfaces.
Butt Weld
A butt weld is a square groove weld used to join two flat pieces that are parallel to one another.
Tack Weld
A tack weld is a temporary weld made to keep two parts joined for a short time before the final weld is made.
