In the most basic terms, metal fabrication consists of building structures with sheet metal. While that may sound simple, there’s a lot more that goes into a metal fabrication project than you might think. In this article, we are going to run through some of the most common techniques used in a metal fabrication project.
Cutting
Perhaps the first step in the fabrication process involves evenly cutting the sheet metal that will be used in the fabrication project. This often involves band saws, chop saws, and cutting torches.
Bending
One of the most popular techniques in metal fabrication is bending. This is typically accomplished with the use of a hydraulic press brakes machine that can easily bend metal to whatever shape is needed for a specific project.
Welding
Welding is probably the first thing most people picture when they think about a metal fabrication project, but it is just one of many techniques that can be used to affix metal and other pieces together. Welding and other methods like locating features may be used during this stage.
Finishing
The final stage in the metal fabrication process is finishing (as the name implies). In this stage, the sheet metal is blasted, primed, and painted to meet the specific desires of the client.
