Locating Features
Locating features provide a perfect solution for locating component parts when integrated into the part design. The use of locating features can remove tooling expenses, shorten assembly times and improve process repeatability. In this article, we’re going to discuss the use of locating features in your part design to eliminate the need for fixtures and tooling.
Spot Welding
Spot welding is process of passing electrical current through two pieces of metal that are sandwiched between electrodes. The current passing through the metal causes the metal to melt at that precise spot, creating a weld joint – hence the name “spot weld.”
Tolerance
Simply put, tolerance is the amount of variability that is acceptable in the manufacturing process. All manufacturing processes have variability, and tolerances allow a designer to define acceptable limits. If the tolerance range is set too wide, the part may not work. If the tolerance range is set too narrow, then manufacturing costs will rise. Tighter tolerances don not guarantee better parts, only potentially more expensive parts.
Hardware
Press hardware is specially designed hardware that is permanently attached to sheet metal components by inserting the hardware into a hole in the sheet metal, applying pressure into the hardware base and pressing it into the metal.
