Forming is an essential aspect of most metal fabrication projects. In this article, we talk about metal forming, how it’s used in a fabrication project, and investigate some of the most common types of forms used.
Press Brakes
The most commonly used method for forming metal in a fabrication project is press brakes. They are so widely used because of their versatility and cost-effectiveness. Press brakes can produce a wide array of bend types, including (but not limited to):
- Angular Bends. These bends are very common and are defined by the inside radius of the bend itself. Angular bend tooling is available in radius sizes from 1/32 of an inch to ½ inch.
- Offset Bends. These bends are formed with the help of special offset tools which form bends simultaneously. As opposed to angular bends, offset bends are defined by the height of the offset, rather than the radius of the bend. Offset tooling is available from 1/16 inch offset heights up to ½ inch offsets.
- V Forming. V forming is a process used to create angular bends with press brakes. This type of bending gets its name from the die used to form the bend, which is shaped like a V.
